Fun Things to do with Kids


  • Lifestyle Family Garden Centre: Corner  Beyers Naude Drive and Ysterhout, Randpark Ridge. This is a Garden Centre with a difference!  Take the whole family while you purchase plants and accessories for the garden.  There are shops offering interior decorating accessories and furnishings, clothing, pets, and crafts. There is a wonderful play area for children with Jungle Gyms, swings and a petting farm.  Train and donkey rides are also available. There is a shady patio next to the play area where lunches, drinks and snacks are served. Tel. 011 792-5616.

  • Johannesburg Zoo: Entrance in Upper Park Drive, off Jan Smuts Ave, Forest Town. Johannesburg Zoo is a great place to take children and is in the process of an exciting revamp. There are lovely shady trees and lawns for picnicking and golf cart hire making getting around the zoo much more fun and less tiring. There is also a Zoo Ferry to take you around rather more economically.  Refreshments can be bought at various stalls around the zoo.  The Johannesburg Zoo also runs very informative holiday programmes for children.  They run in the school holidays and take the form of “Behind the Scenes at the Zoo” and related topics.  It is essential to book for these programmes a little in advance. Not to be missed are the Night Tours, which provide excellent viewing of the Zoo’s nocturnal species. Tel: 011 646-2000.

  • Gold Reef City Theme Park: Northern Parkway Rd. Ormonde. A Gold Mining themed park with many rides for all ages as well as trips down a gold mine and other attractions. It is adjacent to the Gold Reef City Casino to the south of the CBD, with safe and secure parking. See also Page 50 above.

  • Lipizzaner Centre: Dahlia Road, Kyalami. On Sundays starting at 11.00, a team of white stallions performs in the elegant style of the famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Booking is essential – Tel: 011 468 2719 or Computicket.

  • Never Never Land: Northgate Shopping Centre, Honeydew Road. Never Never Land is an indoor play area for the Under 12’s.  A maze of platforms, slides, swings and tunnels await the children.  When they get tired, they can watch cartoons, draw, paint, etc.  Parents can stay and watch or sign them in for up to two hours while they go shopping.  Never Never Land is also a good venue for birthday parties.   • Northgate Ice Arena: Northgate Shopping Centre Honeydew Road. The Ice Arena is fun for both the kids and adults.  Entrance is approximately R33 and skate hire is R17 per session.  Drinks and snacks are available inside the rink.  There are a number of restaurants around the rink where parents can sit and watch the kids skating.   • Planetarium: Yale Rd, off Empire. Educational and entertaining programmes on different aspects of astronomy are held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Phone for programme details and times. Tel: 011 716 3199. Tickets are also available at Computicket. www.wits.ac.za/planetarium

  • Magaliesburg Express: Monthly Steam Train ride to Magaliesburg. Dress up in Edwardian style and take a picnic. Tel:  011 888 1154.

  • The Paintbox Studio: 44 Stanley Ave. A fun filled exciting place to unleash your creativity. Come and spend an hour or two doing decoupage, ceramic, or fabric painting. Also perfect for children’s parties, kitchen teas and corporate functions. Tel: 011 482 2795.

  • Compu-Kart: Enjoy all the excitement of grand prix racing in Edenvale, with mini and super grand prix, endurance races, corporate events and birthday party shootouts.  Tel: 011 450 1405/6 

  • The South African Military Museum: Erlswold Way, Saxonwold, open every day from 9am to 4.30pm.  Tel: 011 646 5513

  • Wondercave: Take time out for a fabulous, breathtaking experience at the 5 – 10 million year old Wondercave, situated in the Kromdraai valley in The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. Limestone pools, cave pearls and popcorn formations and much more.  Tel: 011 957 0106

  • Sterkfontein Caves: Bring the family along and enjoy a guided adventure. Beneath the dust of millions of years you will see for yourself some of the most important fossils ever found and you’ll hear the magnitude of their significance to the world. Sterkfontein Caves are most famous for two world renowned hominid finds. Fees for adults R35 and R20 for children, group bookings are essential.  Tel: 011 668 3200
